(HIT) – Started in 1987, Lake Cook Exteriors in Palatine, Ill. is proof that niche service sales really do work in the building industry. The 10-person company installs low-maintenance windows and patio doors, entry doors, trim, gutters and siding — and that’s it.

By focusing on superior customer service and the recommendation of dependable products, Bill and Karen Sheetz have seen their company flourish from a “mom and pop” operation to a second-generation family business on the rise. “We’ve had more than 10,000 customers in our 27-year history and we know our customer service and down-to-earth business philosophy keep our company growing steadily,” says Bill Sheetz, president of Lake Cook Exteriors. “Our second key to success is recommending a small number of quality products that have a proven track record.”

In the windows and doors segment of their business, the preferred products for Sheetz and his team are Simonton windows, Therma-Tru® doors and Fypon® trim.

“I’m proud to say that we’ve installed about 800 Simonton windows in eight years without a single service issue,” says Sheetz. “The construction quality, prices, order and delivery time are incredible on these windows. These are our primary windows and patio doors for a reason. I believe in the quality of the product and feel good about recommending it to my customers.”

For entry door systems, Lake Cook Exteriors made a switch to endorsing Therma-Tru products in 2012 after touring the company’s manufacturing facility. “We were attracted to Therma-Tru doors because of the wide range of products offered and the company’s solid reputation,” says Sheetz. “We’re impressed with the products they produce and with the support they give us for our sales efforts.

“Therma-Tru is the only brand we sell. Because the company’s door options are so versatile, we can easily meet our client’s ‘wish list’ and budget for every project. From woodgrain doors with decorative glass inserts to smooth, painted solid doors. The options are incredible.”

To add curb appeal to their home exterior projects, Sheetz recommends his clients add Fypon polyurethane trim pieces to surround doors and windows. “I’ve been selling and installing Fypon products for more than 20 years,” says Sheetz. “The low-maintenance pieces look like real milled wood, are lightweight and easy to install. They truly add a great detailed look to the home and enhance the new windows and doors we install.”

Lake Cook Exteriors uses their home-setting showroom with a variety of displays to help customers select their products. Along with the company’s preferred windows, doors and trim products, there are also Mastic vinyl siding displays along with gutter and downspout products available for homeowners to view.

“Nothing beats the chance for a homeowner to walk into a showroom to see and feel the actual products they can choose to have installed on their home,” says Sheetz. “It takes away the guesswork and trepidation.

“Our full attention to customer service and product knowledge have helped us earn the Better Business Bureau® ‘no complaints award’ and A+ rating 11 times. And, we’ve received the Angie’s List® ‘Super Service Award’ four years in a row. For our customers, this is a winning slate of credentials that helps them feel comfortable when selecting us for their home improvement projects.”
