(HIT) – The focus in May during Home Improvement Month for many homeowners should start at the top of the house. That’s the advice of home improvement expert Allen Lyle with Today’s Homeowner with Danny Lipford.

“The roof is the most essential item that helps protect your home and its contents, so you want to place a priority on its care,” says Lyle, co-host of the Today’s Homeowner with Danny Lipford radio show. “May is a terrific time of year to evaluate and make improvements to the roof. You’ve just finished up the winter season and it’s before summer storms and heat set in. That means it’s the ideal time to get your roof inspected and any damaged areas fixed.”
Lyle suggests that homeowners hire professional roofers or roofing inspectors to evaluate roofs after major storms or with older homes. For homeowners doing their own evaluation he recommends the following:
Tip 1 – Make sure to inspect your roof on a windy day. That’s when you’re most likely to see broken tiles or those not secured properly because they’ll be “flapping” in the wind.
Tip 2 – Take a pair of binoculars and “inspect” your roof from all angles around your house. Look for missing or damaged tiles that may indicate the life of your roof is coming to an end. If that’s the case, consider a replacement roof made of polymer tiles, like those from DaVinci Roofscapes, that offer long-lasting beauty and durability, without maintenance hassles.
Tip 3 – If you have asphalt shingles, when you clean out your gutters, look to see how many asphalt granules are in the gutter. An abundance of shingle granule residue means your roofing product is starting to break down and fail, which may mean a new roof is in your future.
Tip 4 – To view and fix problem areas yourself, use caution on the roof and with ladders. Always work with at least one other person and take special care with tools brought onto the roof to secure them.
Tip 5 – When severe weather or a hail storm comes through your area, note the date and time immediately. If you think your roof has been damaged, contact your insurance agent first. There’s no need to contact a roofer. Your insurance company will send their own inspector to evaluate any damage that may have occurred.
“All areas of the country are subject to severe weather of different kinds,” says Lyle. “From strong winds to wildfires to hail, our roofs take a battering from Mother Nature. One of the best way to protect your home is to invest in a roof that can stand up to the elements and has a long, solid warranty.
“I’ve put some polymer slate and shake roofing tiles from DaVinci Roofscapes through my own tests. I’ve burned them with a blow torch, frozen them, pounded on them with a baseball bat and they still look like new. That’s the advantage of having an advanced man-made product on your roof. These synthetic roofing tiles are a real asset for any home.”
